Malaysian Fuel Prices Screensaver

The Malaysian Fuel Prices screensaver charts a year of Malaysia's weekly retail fuel price ceilings in ringgit per litre. Prices are set administratively rather than floating, but they are not fixed: all three grades track world crude through the pricing formula, and RON95 alone has ranged from 2.05 to 4.27 ringgit across the window shown. The gap between subsidised RON95 and unsubsidised RON97 is roughly what the subsidy is worth per litre. It runs in the browser with nothing to install; press ESC to exit.

How the Malaysian Fuel Prices screensaver works

The saver reads data.gov.my, the Malaysian government's open data API.

No account and no key: the request goes straight from your browser, or from this site's own refreshed copy of the feed where the source does not allow browser access.

Values are drawn on a canvas that resizes with the window, so it works on a laptop or a wall display.

If the source is unreachable the saver says so on screen rather than showing stale numbers as though they were current.

A worked example

Three lines run across the year: green for RON95, amber for RON97, blue for diesel, each labelled with its current price on the right. They move together, because the same formula drives all three. The distance between the green and amber lines is the interesting measurement — that is the subsidised grade against the unsubsidised one. The footer names the effective week and states the gap directly; at the time of writing RON97 cost RM 0.53 more than RON95.
