How the Word Clock screensaver works

The face is a fixed 10 by 11 grid of letters that hides every phrase the clock needs. All letters are drawn dimmed; the saver then brightens only the cells that spell the current time, leaving the rest as faint background texture.

Every five seconds it reads new Date() and rounds the minutes to the nearest five. It looks up which words apply - for example TWENTY, FIVE and PAST - and whether to name the current or next hour, since QUARTER TO and similar phrases point ahead.

The lit cells fade up to full brightness with a soft text-shadow glow in your accent color and a smooth opacity transition, so the wording changes gently rather than snapping on.

Because the clock works in five-minute steps, the words update on the nearest five-minute boundary rather than every second - true to how a real word clock reads.

A worked example

With the default cyan Lit color and 15% dim on the unlit letters, at 10:32 the grid lights IT IS HALF PAST TEN in glowing cyan while every other letter sits faint in the background.
