Why screensavers existed — and why we still love them

Screensavers started as a practical fix for screen burn-in. Decades later the technical need has mostly gone, but the little moving artworks stuck around. Here's why.

A screensaver is a program that fills an idle screen with moving images. It sounds decorative, and today it mostly is — but it began as a genuine engineering fix.

The burn-in problem

Early CRT and, later, plasma displays could suffer burn-in: if the same bright image sat on screen for hours, it could etch a faint permanent ghost into the phosphor. A spreadsheet left open overnight, a menu bar, a logo — anything static was a risk. The solution was simple: when the computer detects no input for a while, replace the static image with something that constantly moves, so no single pixel stays lit the same way for long.

From utility to art

Once the screen was going to move anyway, developers had a blank canvas. Berkeley Systems' After Dark turned that canvas into a playground in 1989, and its Flying Toasters became a cultural icon. Windows shipped its own starfield and 3D pipes; DVD players drew a bouncing logo in standby. The practical fix had become a form of folk art.

Do modern screens need them?

Mostly not. LCD panels don't burn in the way CRTs did. OLED screens can retain images, so phones and TVs use subtle pixel-shifting and dimming instead of full screensavers. So the technical reason has largely faded.

Why they endure

Because they were never only about burn-in. A screensaver marks the moment a machine goes quiet and becomes, briefly, something to look at. That's the part worth keeping — which is exactly why Afterglow rebuilds them to run in a browser tab. Pick one and let your screen daydream.
