Retrograde motion, moon signs and planetary hours all sound like folklore — but each one is a well-defined, computable astronomical event. Here's the real math running behind the Astrology category.

The Astrology category is the newest addition to Afterglow, and it sits in an odd spot: astrology itself isn't a science, but most of what it's built on — where a planet actually is, whether it's really moving backward, when the Moon really changes sign — is ordinary, computable astronomy. We leaned hard into that overlap.

Where the planets actually are

Sky Chart Wheel is the clearest example: it plots the Sun, Moon and eight planets at their real current geocentric ecliptic longitude — the same coordinate astronomers use — around a 360° zodiac wheel. That's the same orbital-element math behind the site's Orrery, just read off in signs and degrees instead of heliocentric coordinates. Sun Sign Dial does the narrower version of this: a needle pointing at the Sun's real ecliptic degree, which is more precise than the fixed month-day table most horoscope columns use.

Retrograde motion is a real optical effect

Planetary Retrograde Tracker and Mercury Retrograde Countdown aren't reading a superstition — they're comparing a planet's real ecliptic longitude one day apart. When it's decreasing, the planet is retrograde: a genuine apparent effect of Earth and the other planet moving at different orbital speeds, the same reason a car you're overtaking seems to drift backward against a distant hillside. Outer planets like Neptune and Pluto spend roughly five months of the year retrograde for exactly this reason, which is real and checkable, whatever you make of what it's supposed to mean.

The Moon moves fast enough to compute live

The Moon circles the zodiac in about 27.3 days, changing sign roughly every 2.5 days — fast enough that Moon Sign Tracker can show a real, live countdown to the next change. Void-of-Course Moon Timer goes a step further: it scans forward to find the Moon's last real aspect (a specific angle to another planet) before that sign change, and marks everything after that point as 'void of course' — a genuinely well-defined classical concept, just one that needed real orbital scanning to compute properly.

An hour that isn't 60 minutes

Planetary Hours Clock revives an ancient system: divide daylight into 12 hours and night into 12 more, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets in a fixed rotating order. Because it's based on your city's real sunrise and sunset rather than the clock, a 'planetary hour' is only 60 minutes near the equinoxes — in midsummer, daytime hours run long and nighttime hours run short.
